In the words of most of my family, “We were wondering when this was going to happen!”
December 20, 2015 was one of my favorite days. A few days earlier, Kurt had asked me if we could get breakfast on Sunday before church. I tried really hard not to think anything of it, but we were at the point where I knew we could get engaged at any time, so yeah, I was thinking about it. Anything even slightly out of the ordinary could indicate a day unlike any I had experienced before. So that was a long week.
Sunday rolled around and at 8:00 sharp, Kurt came to my door and from the window I saw him carrying some things, which confirmed that my thinking was correct. Because of this, I was acting like a total dweeb- I knew what was happening but didn’t want him to know I knew, so I trying to act normal and yeahh.. that didn’t really work.
He brought me some pastries from a local bakery and some tea in a really nice Teavana thermos (I had lost my other one) and asked if we could go for a walk instead of breakfast. There’s a park near my apartment so we went there after eating the goodies he brought. We walked around for a bit and then found a nice little bench where he presented a lovely little speech, got on his knee and asked me to marry him. Clearly, I agreed, and just like that, we were engaged!
Even though the question wasn’t a surprise, the rest of the day he had planned, was. We went to breakfast at one of my favorite places and surprisingly there was no line so we were seated right away, and still had time to get to church. We saw some friends at church (who knew this was happening) so the congratulations began. We asked our pastor to marry us and his excitement was so encouraging.
After church we went to Kurt’s parent’s house where my parents surprised me with their presence and we had a nice little lunch to celebrate. We called family members in the afternoon to share the good news and then treated ourselves to the most expensive meal we’ve ever had with each other in the evening. It was such a fun and special day and I will treasure it always.
And so begins the wedding planning journey, which I’m sure you’ll be hearing about a fair amount over the next few months..
